I spend a lot of time on the internet researching information, trying to keep up with the latest wedding trends, and just looking for stuff that catches my attention.  During one of those “just looking” phases I came across the above heading on a page for the Maryland National Aquarium. 

What a great idea!  They provide the Blue and you provide everything else.  This is a great way to make your wedding day unique.  How many people are able to say that they got to eat wedding cake with a shark.

I’ve never really thought about photography in that way.  Sometimes the best images that you capture of a client in your studio are the ones that you didn’t have them strike a pose.  A child tumbling backwards, a person lovingly adjusting another’s clothing, etc.  But those moments happen just as quickly as a lightning strike.  Blink and you missed them.

In all the years that we have been capturing moments of people’s lives, some of the most powerful ones are with fathers and their daughters at a wedding.  Even the toughest, hard-nosed fathers will get choked up when asked “Who gives this woman away?” or during the infamous father daughter dance.  I think that’s why a lot of the dances that are making headlines are not the slow dances of old.  Having to remember the choreography keeps Daddy’s mind off the fact that he has lost his little girl to another man.  But he never really loses us.  We always know that when all else fails call Dad.  Dad will come to the rescue and either fix it or knows someone who can.

 

This Sunday over 70 million fathers will be honored with phone calls, neck ties or soap on the rope.  Some fathers will even get flowers because roses are the official flower for Father’s Day. A red rose is worn in the lapel if your father is living, a white rose if he is deceased.  Yes some of the gifts are cliché but they are also badges that have been earned by men who have had tea partes with tiaras, taught a child to throw a curve ball or to change the oil.

 

Thank you to all the men who in some way are a father figure.

What is a Father?

Father’s Day was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd.  Its first celebration was in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910.  After hearing a sermon about Mother’s day she wanted a similar honor for her father.  Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who reared his six children in Spokane, Washington.  I was wondering what the dictionary’s definition of a Father is and this is what I found:

The dictionary’s definition of a father is: 

 

1.  man who is parent: a man who is the parent of a human being, or a male animal that has produced offspring – “been like a father to me”

2. man acting as parent: a man who brings up and looks after a child as if he were its father

3. man who is ancestor: a man who is an ancestor, especially the founder of a family or people – “the land of our fathers and mothers”

4. man who is founder: a man who establishes, founds, or originates something – “the father of modern linguistics”

5. prototype: something that is a prototype or original version of something else

6. man who is leader: a man who is a community or civic leader – “the town fathers”

 

There are times when I think a father is forgotten about, there is so much focus on a mother and her roles in both society and a child’s life.  But what about the father and his influences in the world?  It’s not an easy job being a father especially when there is so much expected of them.  This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day.  We show our appreciation to all the men that take on this role.  To all the fathers who throw their kids in the air, chase away the scary monsters, teach them how to throw a ball, how to change the oil and remain calm even when they are just as afraid as you are – this day is for you.
